Wavefront
The reason why light is refracted when passing from one medium to another is the interaction of the wave front with the medium through which it will pass.
Barrel
An example of this is the rotation of a barrel from a medium with a low coefficient of friction (concrete) to a medium with a high coefficient of friction (asphalt). Since the right side of the barrel interacts with the frictional medium before, the barrel moves in that direction.
You can repeat this at home by using a coke can, hardwood as a low friction surface, and carpet as the high friction surface.
