SUPERIOR MIRAGE:
The superior mirage is generally examined at sea.
In this case, the water surface is cooler than the air in the atmosphere.
When the rays from the sun illuminate a ship as seen in the picture, the image reflected from this base creates a virtual (apparent) image as if the ship is hovering, due to the low index of refraction in the upper layers of the atmosphere.

LOWER MIRAGE
For most materials, the refractive index decreases as the temperature increases.
The decrease in the refractive index of the soil or the air just above the road on a sunny and dry day causes the sun’s rays to be reflected from this layer.
This layer acts as a mirror, reflecting the image of the people nearby.
If we only see the reflection of the blue sky, we perceive this image as water.
This is called the lower mirage.
